Mobile Crane Inspector Specialty Exam Outline

50 questions/90 minutes (calculator permitted)

The Mobile Crane Specialty examination portion of the CCO Crane Inspector certification program tests the following knowledge areas relating to mobile cranes:

Domain 1: Pre-Inspection Survey 
Approximately 12% of test

Domain 2: Visual Inspection
Approximately 40% of test

Domain 3: Operational Testing
Approximately 14% of test

Domain 4: Load Testing and Manufacturer’s Load Charts
Approximately 24% of test

Domain 5: Records Review
Approximately 10% of test

DOMAIN 1: PRE-INSPECTION SURVEY

  1. Interpret the crane-specific standards and regulations applicable to crane inspection, including, but not limited to:
    1. ASME B30
    2. OSHA
  2. Identify cranes and crane types, including:
    1. Configuration
    2. Terminology
    3. Applications
    4. Components

DOMAIN 2: VISUAL INSPECTION

  1. Identify and inspect systems, to include:
    1. Pneumatic
    2. Hydraulic
    3. Mechanical
    4. Electrical
    5. Structural
    6. Non-structural (i.e., ladders, sheet metal, walkways, cab glass)
  2. Identify and inspect tire requirements, to include:
    1. Size/load rating
    2. Condition
    3. Pressure
  3. Identify and inspect operator aids and/or safety devices
  4. Identify wire rope, including:
    1. Rejection criteria
    2. Reeving specifications
    3. Termination hardware
    4. Type
  5. Recognize the manufacturer's limitations

DOMAIN 3: OPERATIONAL TESTING

  1. Recognize crane signals
    1. Hand signals
    2. Voice signals
  2. Define control characteristics/functions

DOMAIN 4: LOAD TESTING AND MANUFACTURER’S LOAD CHARTS

  1. Identify the differences between types of load tests, including:
    1. Proof
    2. Stability
    3. Structural
    4. Line pull
    5. Devices
    6. Remount
  2. Calculate how to interpret and apply load charts for load testing

DOMAIN 5: RECORDS REVIEW

  1. Identify what engineering documentation must be provided for:
    1. Manufacturer-specific
    2. Remount
