NCCCO Issues Improved Log Book

October 2013—A revised and improved Crane Operator Experience Log book is now being issued to all newly CCO-certified crane operators by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO). The log book, which is provided free of charge by NCCCO within a few weeks of an operator first achieving certification, now features a more durable, waterproof cover designed to better withstand the demanding operating conditions often encountered on site.

“The more than 15,000 log books we have issued over the past 18 months have been extremely well-received,” said NCCCO Program Manager, Tara Whittington, “and the only sustained request we have had for improvement was an upgrade of the cover. We listened—and the new log book is the result.” A recent survey of CCO-certified crane operators showed that nearly three-quarters of operators polled said they use the books at least weekly and indicated that the included OSHA reference materials are one of the most popular features.

While use of the log book is not required to record the 1,000 hours of crane experience necessary for recertification, it does provide a convenient and centralized place for doing so, Whittington said. The convenient, pocket-sized book features one-week-to-a-view pages for the tracking of jobs, locations, cranes used, daily hours, and other information over a 12-month period. The book also has space to record personal information and CCO certifications, as well as emergency medical data and contacts.
